Abstract

The oceanographic conditions during the cold phase of the ENSO cycle 1997-2000 off central Chile were analyzed, using data from oceanographic CTD casts, coastal sea level data and sea surface temperature anomalies in front of Valparaiso, as well as sea level data from Callao, Perú to study the remote origin of intraseasonal fluctuations (30 to 90 days periods) and its effect in the geostrophic current system in front of Valparaiso. The observed fluctuations of sea level data in Callao showed intraseasonal oscillations likely modulated by perturbations of equatorial origin, which propagated as coastal trapped waves through the eastern boundary of the Pacific Ocean, with an expression in the current dynamics off Valparaiso as a southward flow, with a core of high salinity and low dissolved oxygen, centered at 180 m depth. On the other hand, geostrophic velocities show a system of alongshore currents and counter-currents with intensification during fall.
