Abstract

We hereto present the monthly anomalies of different atmospheric indicators related to the “El Niño” Southern Oscillation measured at Chilean weather stations between January 1997 and December 2000. According to the analysis, significant anomalies of the atmospheric circulation associated with the warm event “El Niño” started from May 1997 onward. While between Arica and Concepción negative atmospheric pressure anomalies between -1 and -5 hPa were registered from May to September 1997 and from December to January 1998, the air temperature showed positive anomalies of around 2 and 3 ºC with two peaks: one during July-August 1997 and the other in December-January 1998. The precipitation regime in 1997 registered an increment far above the annual normal values in the northern and central parts of Chile. From April 1998, the atmospheric conditions are presented unfavourable in relation to the previous year and they lasted until mid 2000 accouting for La Niña´s presence (cold event). Only for 1998, dry conditions were registered in central Chile (precipitation records between May and August far below normal values). The precipitation surplus (deficit) in Chile during the winter of 1997 (1998) is associated with synoptic configurations characterized by a weaker (stronger) and northerly (southerly) displaced subtropical anticyclone in the Southeastern Pacific Ocean. For years 1999 and 2000, even though the synoptic configuration resembled a La Niña year, winter precipitations were around normal values.
