Abstract

The Antofagasta zone shows changes related to the composition of the phytoplankton due to warm and cold periods known as “El Niño or ENSO” and “La Niña”. Also the presence of water masses and upwelling phenomena have enormous importance in the composition and growth process of the phytoplankton. A revision on some historic information on phytoplankton and red tides events in the area is given. From 1964 to 1999 forty six red tide phenomena have been recorded and the yearly occurrence is five events per year. Prorocentrum micans Ehrenberg (dinoflagellate) causes red tides phenomena that occur mainly during warm periods while Mesodinium rubrum (Lohmann) Hamburger & Buddenbrock (protozoa ciliate) appear in cold periods. On the other side, qualitative and quantitative information related to phytoplankton and some others factors recorded during the presence of “El Niño or ENSO” from January to May 1998 at Antofagasta bay is given and similarly, the presence of a warm period in the area has been confirmed due to an upwelling event during October 1998 at Mejillones del Sur bay caused by the Equatorial Subsurface water mass.
