Abstract

The effects that El Niño event 97-98 produce in the industrial fishery of the northern zone of Chile are reviewed analyzing the industrial landings of the main pelágics resources. In order to evaluate the effects of the environement in the main resources series of oceanographic data obtained during cruises conducted in the zone in this period related with sea surface temperature and its anomaly and those data derived from monthly monitoring of the environmental conditions performed by the fishing industry are used. The study concludes that the major effect of this event was observed in a drastic fall in the abundance of the anchoveta, who precipitated one complete rearangement of the industrial fishing sector in the Nortern zone of Chile.
