Abstract

The objective of this work is to indicate the magnitude of the precipitations occurred in the central and northern part of the country during winter and spring of 1997, and the consequences on the agrarian activities from the III to VIII Regions. The results suggest that the precipitation behavior during 1997 was significantly higher respect to the normal and/or average values. Extreme precipitation events occurred during June, August and October. This above normal precipitation caused significant losses in the agrarian sector and imposed the use of large amount of pesticides to counteract the proliferation of plant pest and diseases. As a result the amount of exported fruit decreased that year. On the other hand, excess precipitation benefited the agriculture sector due to the large accumulation of water and snow for other production periods.
