Abstract

The behavior of hour-cold, degree-day, frost and precipitation are analized for agroecosystems of the Región del Maule, Chile (around 35º S) for 1997 (El Niño), 1998 and 1999 (La Niña) years. A study of the long-term trend (1960-1999) is included for the three variables mentioned above. Results indicate that El Niño, as well as La Niña cause anomalies on hourcold, degree-day, annual precipitation and frost during the winter. The El Niño-La Niña effects are attenuated throughout the spring as revealed by the degree-days record. It is concluded that regional fruit activity is highly vulnerable to the El Niño-La Niña occurrence. Besides, a long-term behavior on the thermal variables is found, whose main characteristic is to be colder than the 1960-1976 average. From 1977 to 1999 this behavior changes to a warmer condition compared to the climatologic mean.
