Abstract

Activities in the maritime sector have grown exponentially worldwide, increasing the pressure over marine resources and raising a series of issues and land-use conflicts. Based on this fact, Colombia´s General Maritime Directorate (DIMAR) has defined and implemented a methodology for Marine and Coastal Management with a Maritime Authority Vision (MCM: MAV). The methodology involves tools of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), a multi-criteria analysis, and an Allocation and Co-location Model (ACM) to assess current and future conditions in the Department of Bolivar marine and coastal area. Zoning by index and number of land-use conflicts and free zones mapping were obtained from the 55 uses/activities identified. This information will facilitate monitoring, evaluation, and updating of maritime activities in this area. The results are considered as a starting point for the MCM: MAV, since the established method, could be replicated in other marine coastal areas of the country.
