Abstract

The most important general upwelling zone in the eastern tropical Pacific is located off the coast of Peru, which is part of the Northern Humboldt Current System (NHCS), between 0°S at 20°S and 70°W at 90°W , where the Peruvian coast has a maritime area equivalent to 0.1% of the world's oceanic coast and where 10% of global fisheries are captured, being one of the areas with the highest biological productivity. This study seeks to characterize the mentioned area from a hydrographic overview where oceanographic data from the most current World Ocean Database (WOD18) are presented, including unpublished information from the National Oceanographic Data Center (CENDO) of the Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation ( DHN) of the Peruvian Navy, where information on cruises from 1994 to 2018 is available, where data were collected with various CTD equipment. The data obtained from the DHN were reprocessed according to the GO-SHIP international standard, and within the TEOS-10 oceanographic protocol, where it is possible to characterize the main water masses present and define the average seasonal standards of the hydrological characteristics of Absolute Salinity, Temperature Conservative and Neutral Density, for the summer and winter of the southern hemisphere, thus keeping an updated review compiled from information found in several worldwide databases. It is important to highlight the novelty of this work in relation to the application of international protocols in data obtained in this region.
