Abstract

The decision-making process for the implementation of a strategy that guarantees the conservation of underwater cultural heritage implies the discussion and assessment of multiple variables. Archaeological remains preserved in underwater contexts are characterized by their vulnerability to changes; any alteration in their environment can be fatal. The discipline of conservation/restoration has to study every case in detail before taking any action; in general lines, it is possible to extract the material to be treated in a specialized laboratory and later be exhibited in a museum, or an in situ protection system can be designed and implemented. The advantages and disadvantages deriving from these actions encourage us to create diverse proposals that allow us to guarantee the study, protection and divulgation of underwater cultural heritage. This article points out different elements to be considered in the decisionmaking process for the design of a suitable and feasible conservation strategy. Thus, the article collects some related international successful cases as well as it describes the strategy implemented in two shipwrecks located in Cartagena de Indias Bay, Colombia.
