Abstract

To determine the state of development of a rnangrove located at Pasacaballos, Nariño, we measured diameter at breast height (DBH), basal area and height of trees at two sites. Based on these data, we calculated Hotdridge's Complexity; Index, which, on overage, was 0.14 for trees with DBH 2.5 cm y 2.85 for trees with 10.0 cm. To asses the contribution of each species to forest estructure in terms of density, dominance and frecuency, we combined these relative measures to obtain the socalled ¡mportance Value, which was 62.6% for Rhizophora sp., 362% for Mora megistosperma and 1.15% for Pelliciera rhizophorae. The degree of development and species composition of a forest are in great part deterrnined by soil characteristics. To evaluated their influence on mangrove structure, we estimated come soil granulometric parameters such as average particle size, selection, symmetry, classification, hydrodynamic factor and textural composition. The results indicated an enrichment of the soil with fine partióles (silt and clap), anda weak hydrodinamic action. We also measured content of organic matter (21.06%), and interstitial salinity (13.SC/oo). These conditions apppear to favor the high growth of Rhizophora sp. and M. megistosperma, which are the dominant species in the mangroues of Pasacaballos.
