Abstract

The present research was developed with support of the Colombian Navy, General Maritime Directorate, through CCCP (Centro Control Contaminación del Pacífico) and ECOPETROL (Colombian Petroleum Company), all of this with the interinstitutional agreement of CCCP — ECOPETROL. The analyzed information belong from February 1997 to December of the same year, with the aim objective to evaluate the total concentration aromatic hydrocarbons in marine sediments of Tumaco bay. This achieved information is a basic tool at the while of evaluate the stated of levels of all this kind toxic compounds which carne from oil and it's derivates. Several sources of aromatic hidrocarbons have been recognized such as: Spillage from conventional multibuoy off shore Terminal at ECOPETROL; hidrocarbon residues are being dumped into the sea from the wash out of outboard motor transport within the Tumaco bay. Another source of hidrocarbon contamination is provided by the blown up of the transandino pipeline by subversive actions. The crude oil finds its way out to the sea using the waters of the Gü iza and Mira rivers. Lately we have been receiving hidrocarbon contamination from the break up of the transandino pipeline, this oil spillages arrived to nearshore water of Tumaco by using ocean currents. From the results we conclude that there is any critical concentration having defined the value of 3.2 ug/g as a reference for sampling station which has been monitored for several years (Pindo Bridge Station). This sampling site has been regarded as the more polluted by hidrocarbons along the Colombian Pacific Coast.
