Abstract

This analysis was based in the information gathered in Tumaco's Bay during the years 1995 to 2000. This allowed to obtain a general visión of the behavior of the community of diatoms and dinoflagellates in responso to climatic changes and natural phenomenon as El Niño and La Niña, which affected the composition of these groups. An increase of the population of diatoms was observed during La Niña and decrease during El Niño. For the group of dinoflagellates the response was given of completely opposite way. The range of temperature in which was observed major abundance of diatoms was from 26 to 27.5° C and for the dinoflagellates from 28 to 31° C. The behavior of the phytoplankton also showed a cióse relation with other variables as daytime, months and nutrients.
