Abstract
The United Nations, through the international Maritime Organization (IMO), has promoted initiatives since 1998 to reduce transfer risks of invadive species by international maritime traffic vessels. This type of pollution has been identifíed as one of the causes of global biodiversity loss. In 2004, the lnternational Convention far the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments was approved in a diplomatic conference, in which the States made a clear commitment to minimize the transfer of invasive aquatic species due to different ship vectors of international maritime traffic, such as ballastsediments, machi ne boxes, hui/, among others. This Agreement was enacted in September 2017 accompanied by a series of documents, guides and technical guidelines to ensure its implementation.
