Abstract
The precipitation regime in central Chileand the elements of the general atmospheric circulation in the Southeast Pacific that shape this regime are described. The interannual rainfall variability presents a clear ENSO cycle signal through indirect physical mechanisms, particularly the PSA teleconnection pattern that favors the blo-cking of the westerlies and the subsequent shift of the storm tracks towards central Chile during the development of the warm phase of that cycle (El Niño). In addition to the inter- annual rainfall variability, intraseasonal oscillations modulate the ENSO signal during the development of El Niño. In this context the general manifestations of the extremes of the last ENSO cycle in the central Chile rainfall: 1997 (warm phase) and 1998-1999 (cold phase) are analyzed, including a comparison with previous events.
