Abstract
Spatial and temporal variations of sea surface temperature (TSM) and coastal series of winds and sea level were analyzed from October from 1997 to September of 1999 in the central zone of Chile (32º-36º S, 71º-75º W). During this period the study area was affected by the El Niño 1997-98 and La Niña 1998-99 phenomena, allowing the identification of differences in surface thermal structures. During El Niño event warmer than normal waters were observed in the coastal margin, where typical upwelling cold waters dominate during normal periods. Smaller temperature gradients offshore than in the cold event (La Niña) were also observed. The upwelling events were more frequent during La Niña periods. Three coastal upwelling cells were identified: Valparaíso (32,5º-33,1º S) with its focus at Punta Curaumilla, south of San Antonio (33,5º34,2º S) with its focus at Punta Topocalma and south of Constitución (34,9º-35º,9º S) with its focus at Cabo Carranza and Punta Nugurne. Wind events of 3 to 15 days produced lowering in the sea level near the coast and coastal cooling. The orientation of the upwelling tongue at each cell, was associated to winds from the S and SW. During the warm event the tongue of upwelled water at Valparaíso was oriented toward the W and NW for winds from the S, while a predominant direction toward the NW was observed south of San Antonio and mainly toward the W south of Constitución for winds from the S. On the other hand, in the cold event the dominant orientation of the upwelled water in Valparaíso was toward the W for winds from the SW, and south of San Antonio it was also toward the W but for winds from the S and more intense than those observed during El Niño.
