Abstract
The effects and impacts of climate variation in the Southwest Pacific, associated to phenomena like El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), have been studied at both national and regional levels, developing into numerical prediction models far atmospheric and oceanic extreme conditions, so to avoid human and economic losses in the distinct productive sectors. This paper show the antecedents of this research, especially those developed under the «Estudio Regional del fenómeno El Niño (ERFEN)» program for the Permanent Commission of the South Pacific; the summary of the results obtained from the two regional cruises ( 1998 - 1999); and the learnt lessons and future forecasts for implementing a regional system of operational observations.
