Abstract

The low variability observed in the pressure field in San Cristóbal (00º 54 'S-89° 36 'W) and Guayaquil (02 º09'S-79º54' W), due to their equatorial position, in contrast to the great variability related to extratropical disturbances (Bjerknes, 1969), found in Pascua (27°51 'S-109° 32'W) and Juan Fernández (33°37'S-78º50' W), suggested the possibility of using the two local stations, instead of those located in the High Pressure Center Core of the Southeastem Pacific, for the elaboration of indices that respond efficiently and with less noise to the zonal atmospheric circulation. San Cristóbal and Guayaquil, considered in this paper to belong to the eastern limit of the descending branch of the Pacific Walker Circulation, present an excellent correlation with the different phases of the Southem Oscillation. This suggests that San Cristóbal-Darwin and Guayaquil-Darwín indices could be a proper tool for the interpretation of the Walker Circulation/Southern Oscillation.
