Abstract
In Chile the knowledge on tsunamis caused by submarine landslides and their possible effects on the adjacent coast is scant. Evidences of a great submarine slide in the continental slope off Reloca River, 140 km northwest of the Concepcion Bay, have been recently discovered. The submarine landslide is evidenced by a great scarp excavated in the continental slope and a massive fan on the seafloor. The fan is composed by three big blocks that add up to 24 km3. Preliminary analyses show that the slide occurred at some time during the Holocene, which indicates this is a geologically recent event. In order to evaluate the threat that a repetition of this kind of event could imply, the ensuing tsunami triggered by the slide was numerically modeled. In addition to obtaining synthetic wave height, both offshore and onshore, the inundation area in the headwaters of Conception Bay was determined. For comparative purposes, this area was contrasted with the inundation caused by the tsunami associated to the 2010 earthquake in the same bay. A tsunami triggered by a slide similar to that in Reloca would flood two thirds of the area inundated in 2010. In this way, this paper emphasizes the threat to Chilean coastal settlements that large submarine landslides represent.
