Abstract

Sanquianga National Natural Park (PNNS) harbors the most extensive mangrove area in the Colombian Pacific and South America. Anthropogenic changes associated with the detour of the Patía River into the Sanquianga River in 1972 converted the estuarine conditions of this protected area into a new and dynamic delta. Uncertainties about the new conditions in the state of mangrove cover and the repercussions on sequestered carbon (C) are unknown. In this study, we determine mangrove cover gains and losses using JERS 1 SAR and ALOS-PALSAR imagery over two periods: 1996-2007 and 2007-2017. Additionally, we estimated aboveground biomass (AGB) and C contents and calculated avoided emissions from deforestation. We found a net increase of 243.97 ha of mangrove cover across 21 years and estimated losses of 122.30 ha, where the mouth of Guacama represents 68.48%. The PNNS recorded an average AGB of 393.15 Ton/ha and an average C of 196.58 Ton C/ha for 2017. Also, we estimated 28 277 944.8 GgCO2eq avoided potential emissions from deforestation. The PNNS is a potential area for developing Blue Carbon projects due to a large amount of carbon stock. Strategies involving monitoring tools and the local communities that depend on this ecosystem are necessary to preserve its coverage and ecosystem services in the future.
