Abstract
The tide and non-tidal residuals are analyzed in the Colombian Basin from observed sea level series at 18 places, 14 in the Colombian coasts and other 4 from neighbor countries. A quality control methodology is proposed and applied to this data, which maintain the main constituents’ energy without producing a phase lag and preserving more information than other filters. Besides, harmonic analysis shows that the main constituents in the Caribbean correspond to K1, O1, P1, M2, N2, S2, Mf. From these, S2 harmonic is largely affected by meteorological variations mainly towards the west of the basin. Furthermore, we evaluated three global tide models in the Caribbean, finding that the TPXO9 has the best performance when compared to observed data. The quality of the TPXO9 harmonics near the coast is similar to the harmonics obtained by propagating the tidal wave with a hydrodynamic model forced from deep waters with the same global tidal model; therefore, the use of the hydrodynamic model to obtain coastal harmonics is not suggested. A methodology to forecast the tide at places with and without measurements is presented, using observed tidal harmonics or from the global tidal model, respectively. On both cases, the inclusion of the meteorological dependent seasonal variations (Sa and Ssa) to the tidal forecast are recommended. This inclusion allows the tidal forecast to be more representative of real sea level variations that affect coastal processes and activities in the Caribbean costs.
