Abstract

In this study, we measured annual litter production as an esmitate of primary production in a riverine mangrove located at Bocana Pasacaballos, Nariño, in the Colombian pacific Coast. The litter accumulated in twentv seven 0.25 m baskets positioned at three sities was collected monthtli; during one y;ear (1991 - 1992). mean litter fall was 3.32 g of dry weight/m^2 /d, representing 12.12 t of dry weight/ha/yr. Litter fall varied significantly among sities and throughout the year, but the temporal pattern of production was similar among the three sities. Since leaves are the main component of litter, we measured the time of litter decomposition by monitoring the weight of Rhizophora leaues placed in mesh bags during six months. The data obtained were fitted to a semilogarithmic model, wiht we determined that 235 d was the time to total decomposition, based on the following equation: In (leaf dry weight) = In 35.77 - 0.0054 dai/s. The highiitter production and high decomposition rate obserued in this mangrove shows that it is one of the most productive mangriues in the worid.
