Abstract
The distribution of the upwelling zones in the River basin of the Colombian Pacific has been found by the calculation of the vertical velocities with monthly average of water temperature and salinity data. The calculation is based on the theory of the solution of diagnostic problems with the vertical integration of the equation of continuity and a no lineal three-dimensional model. The results show the existence of the upwelling zones in the CPO during the whole year with 15600 quadrates miles approximately in the thin 0-100 m. Here the vertical velocity of the water going up is in 2x10^-5 cm/s more than the vertical velocity of the water going down. These magnitudes and the distribution of the upwelling zones chance during the year with the migration of the Inter tropical convergence zone, ITCZ. The most intensive and extended upwelling zone can be observed at the first months of the year (february-april) and at the last months (november-december). The upwelling zones start to decrease from May and are minimums between august and october. The upwelling near the Malpelo island, is observed in all the year except in november and December. Around the Gorgona Island upwelling in every month were not appraised, but it is intensive in february, april and december.
