Abstract

During the 2002 and first months of 2003 oceanographic and atmospheric conditions were observad at the Equatorial Pacific and at th© Colombian Pacific Basin (CPB), by satellit© images, two oceanographic cruises at the CPB, and by monitoring every fifteen days hydrometeorological conditions at a station 10miles offshore the Tumaco Bay and daily measurements of sea suiface temperatura (SST) and meteorological parameters atthe coast of Tumaco. Since April 2002, the SST along the Equatorial Pacific Ocean reached positiva anomalías of 0.5° C, maintaining this for 3 consecutiva months at the 3.4 Niño Región. During March-June the Equatorial Trade Winds gradually weaken, meanwhile the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) became persistently negativa. This features determinad the development of an El Niño event. The ocean temperatura rose at the East Equatorial Pacific, from September-October, causing a deeperthermocline, and anomalías of 2° C. Late November the El Nino conditions strengthened, with higher than normal SST valúes (2.5° C), East of the date lina. Between December 2002 and January 2003, anomalous precipitations ocurred in South América, North América and East of Afñca. By late June 2003, warm conditions were replaced by colder surface waters on the Southeastern Pacific, that causad new predicitons of a La Niña event, but were next followed by neutral conditions. The effects of this event on the CPB have been observad since September, by the sea level risas (+11 cm) and positiva SST anomalías (+0.5° C), and since November, by the deepening of the thermocline on the Tumaco Bay anomalous high precipitations, atmospheric temperatura, and SST (+1° C).
