Abstract
This paper presents the methodology used to evalúate oil spill risk assessment on coastal areas and the resulte of its application in the Tumaco Bay. The main stages are described beginning wlth collecting all the Information of the area, specially related wlth three aspeóte: theEcosystem potentially affected, theMan that setties onthat areaand the Pollutant. Then with this information proceeds to: (i) Determine hazard sources for oil spills, keeping in mind the tocalization of the different storage, manipulation and transport places; (ii) Construction of hazard sources map; (iii) Zonification by areas of probable oil slick movement; (iv) Vulnerability determination based on the criteria established, and (v) Risk assessment. Some of the steps mentioned above, were carried out using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), as a basic tool, by means of which is facilitated, not only the storage of the georeferenced information, but the advantage of its addition, subtraction and, intersection tools and the linking of maps with databases. The obtained resulte are centered in the case of a spill in the Ecopetrol terminal and they show the importance of the tide; that is to say, it is required to know not oniy if it is in ebb or flow but if it is Spring or Neap tide. In case that the spill occurs during Neap tide (smaller range), there will be larger reaction time for reaction and mitigation. On the other hand, if the spill happens at spring tide (alignment sun - earth - moon), the reaction time will be smaller since the oil slick will arrive quicker to more sensitive areas.
