Abstract
During years 2003, 2004 and 2005, the chlorophyll a concentration in the Colombian Pacific Basin was determined from satellital images of the ocean color for applications in oceanography, identifying zones of primary productivity. MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) satellital sensor data were used, which were compared with in situ data obtained by the spectrophotometric method, resulting from correlation analysis (r) a 0.7 linear fit and underestimation of MODIS chlorophyll in the whole basin. The most productive zone was found around Gorgona Island, where the highest values of pigment concentration were exhibited, and although these waters are considered complex optically due to their proximity to the coast and the depth, they show a better adjustment than oceanic waters with respect to in situ data.
