Abstract

28 taxa of zooplankton were identified from 21 biological stations sampled during the Oceanographic survey PACIFICO XLII - ERFEN XL along the Pacific coast of Colombia in March 2006 on board R.V. ARC Malpelo. Salps and doliolidae (49%), and copepods (31%) were the most abundant groups. Other taxonomic groups identified were chaetognaths, cladocera, amphipods, brachiura larvae (zoea), polychaeta and jellyfish. Mean sea surface temperature (SMT) during biological sampling was 25.67 ± 0.96 ºC, salinity (S) was 30.14 ± 2.24, dissolved oxygen (DO) was 4.99 ± 0.98 ml l-1 and Chlorophyll-a (Chlo-a) was 0.46 ± 0.45 mg Chlo-a m-3. The range of total abundance of zooplankton was 422 - 17867 ind m-3, while biomass was between 6.98 – 3.75 g m-3. No significant zonal (North – Center – South) differences of abundance (H=0.30 p=0.86) and biomass (H=1.40 p=0.50) were detected in the study zone. Furthermore, no significant correlation was detected between this communitarian indicators and temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and Chlorophyll-a. Spatial distribution of oceanographic (T, S, DO, Chlo-a) and biological (Abundance and Biomass of Zooplankton) variables were homogenous in the Colombian Current during March 2006. However, the zooplanktonic community was dominated by holoplanktonic tunicates (salps and doliolidae) associated with divergence processes in the Panama Bight in response to wind Jet from Panama.
