Abstract

Oceanographical observations were made along the Colombian coast,in the Caribbean Sea, aboard the R /V ARC San Andres of the Colombian Navy, in September 1972, as pant of the national contribution to CICAR program. This paper analiza the surface sea water physical properties distribution off the Colombian Guajira Peninsula between meridians 71°-75° W and the vertical section crossing the upwelling main area during summer time. Anomalies in the surface distribution of temperature, salinity and density near La Guajira coast, in the vicinity of 72cW were observed; waters with low temperatures (T=25.50 °C) associated with high salinities (S>36,50 %) were recorded in this region. lt has been possible to determine that these anomalies are due to upward motiones, the intensity of which was calculated by means of a mathematical Model, to be about 11 4 m/ - month. The continuity of the up ward motions was confirmed by the currence of drift currents, which made transport of "upwelled" waters to NW and W, extending its influence along the Colombian coast.
