Abstract

Marine Debris and the problem related to them seems to be affecting the whole population. In recent years, the deposition of non-biodegradable plastics together with other debris and waste are representing a serious danger to (he marine life and also to (he navigation, especial near (he coastline. The CIOH of the ARC, within (he activities of the CEPPOL program, promoted by COPPNUMA since 1990, is carrying out the monitoring solid floating debris (garbaje) that arrive to (he Caribbean beaches. This activity is developed in colaboration with Mexico and Puerto Rico, as a pilot study for the Caribbean region. The results show a noticeable increment of the plastic non-biodegradable wastes in (he Colombian Caribbean, representing about 60% of (he total so/id floting waste that reach the beaches.
