Abstract

During a period of six months monitoring of biotic and abiotic conditions was conducted in an area affected by the spill of hydrocarbons. A follow up on the process of recuperation of the ecosystem was also conducted. The levels of aromatic hydrocarbon reached 988.3 µg / g during the first samplings and descended to 4.27 µg / g at the end of the study. In organisms bivalves the situation was similar after 13 days of the incident levels of 47.65 µg / g were found but descended to 0.037 µg / g after six months. The concentrations of dissolved and dispersed hydrocarbons fluctuated at levels registered between 150 and 0.61µg / L. At the biological level the major alteration was seen in the benthic community which was drastically affected, even when its recuperation has been significant and it can be said that the ecosystem in general presented a positive response that was accentuated specially in the zones exposed to main tidal influence.
