Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to provide optimal geographical locations for hydrometeorological stations in the Colombian Pacific Basin (CPB). This is done through statistical analysis of multivariate canonical correlation using modeled oceanographic and atmospheric data (sea surface temperature, sea surface salinity, air temperature and relative humidity), and based on the concepts of air and water masses. In order to determine the air and water masses, cluster analysis was used with atmospheric reanalysis data and modeled oceanographic data in the CPB. Monthly data of air and water masses was used to determine the corresponding climatology. Canonical correlation analysis provided information on the month to month relationships between different masses. We identified similarities between air and water masses, which allow us to suggest optimal geographical locations for hydro-meteorological stations in the CPB. We also provide suggestions about the most appropriate equipment to be used, based on their technical and operational characteristics and according to the JCOMM. These results give the possibility of optimizing the available economical and technical resources, and provide a clear methodology that can be applied in other locations.
