Abstract
A three-dimensional, multi-layers, primitive equations, time-dependent, free surface, coastal ocean circulation model is described in detail. The model has been designed to represent ocean physics as realistically as possible given the present-day state of the ad and to address phenomena of monthly time scale and 50-100 km length depending on basin size and grid resolution. The governing equations together with their boundary conditions are solved by finite difference techniques. A horizontally and vertically staggered lattice of grid points is used for the computations. An implicit numerical scheme and a mode splitting technique in time have been adopted for computational efficiency.
